Allison Wheeler is a jazz singer and composer from Monterey, California.
She is a versatile musician with a strong focus on improvisation. She recently graduated with a degree in Jazz Studies from the University of Northern Colorado, where she studied under Julia Dollison and acclaimed arranger Kerry Marsh. In 2018, she won the prestigious DownBeat magazine's award for College Vocalist of the Year. Allison has had the honor of performing alongside stars such as New York Voices, Aubrey Logan and Vertical Voices at events such as the Monterey Jazz Festival, Greeley Jazz Festival and the annual Jazz Education Network (JEN) Conference. Most recently, she had the honor of singing with Lizz Wright at the Prague Sounds Festival 2021.
Her music seamlessly crosses genre boundaries and draws inspiration from such luminaries as Regina Spektor, Norma Winstone, Fiona Apple, Aoife O'Donovan and others. Using jazz and visual art, she creates her own unique world full of improvisation, nostalgia and a love of impressionism. On her debut album Winterspring (2022) she is accompanied by pianist Daniel Bulatkin, double bassist Max Makagonov, drummer Petr Nohavica and guests David Dorůžka (guitar) and Luboš Soukup (saxophone). The album is released by the British label Ubuntu Music.
