David Dorůžka & Robert Fischmann & Martin Novák

Friday 04. 04. 2025, 20:00

David Dorůžka, Robert Fischmann and Martin Novák will perform at U Staré paní. The trio of guitarist David Dorůžka, flautist and singer Robert Fischmann and percussionist Martin Novák was formed in late 2020 with the aim of creating new music on the border between world music and jazz improvisation, which would develop the musical traditions of various regions of Europe and the Middle East. The formation released its debut album, Gilgul (the Hebrew word for cycle or cycle), in September 2023 on the Animal Music label. The CD became the winner of the Anděl Award in the Jazz category, the winner of the Czech Radio's Czech Jazz Harvest poll, was ranked 7th in the World Music Charts Europe and was also nominated for the Deutschen Schallplattenkritik award. The server jazzport.cz wrote that “with concentrated listening one can feel that the music penetrates into the heart. And that it flows from the heart...” and rated the album with five stars. The trio's music is characterized by an original concept and sound, which is also supported by unusual instrumentation or relaxed work with original and traditional material. Thus, it is easy to hear traditional Hasidic chants replaced by metalcore passages, and melodies from medieval Spain can be heard side by side with inspirations from the New York downtown scene.

David Dorůžka ()

David Dorůžka is a Czech jazz guitarist. He has been working professionally on the Czech jazz scene since 1994 and, in addition to concerts all over the world and numerous collaborations with international names, he has also had long stays in the metropolises of New York and Paris. In recent seasons Dorůžka has been busy with concert tours in Israel, France, Germany, Poland, Hungary and Slovakia. In addition to performing with Iva Bittova, Swedish band The Stoner and his own trio, he has also recently recorded with stars such as Chris Cheek, Daniele di Bonaventura, Aga Zaryan and Cyrille Oswald. Dorůžek's main concert activity, however, is his trio. Most of the repertoire consists of original compositions, but there are also pieces taken from the pop sphere, jazz evergreens (Sonny Rollins, Kurt Weill) or arranged songs from the classical repertoire (Edvard Grieg). The trio's playing is dynamic and sensitive, firmly rooted in the jazz tradition, yet unafraid of experimentation and transitions to other genres of the contemporary music world.
